Erin Oliver
Art is a lifelong passion!
Erin is an active artist and teacher, working on a new series of paintings and teaching art locally at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, the Carrboro ArtsCenter, and HappyMess in Durham. She holds an Art Education degree from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art, and has been teaching art for over seven years in to a variety of age groups. During her studies, she had the opportunity to study art in Rome, Paris, and Berlin. She has remained active in the art world through continuing my practice, engaging with her peers, and attending educational opportunities. Her recent exhibitions include the Faculty Exhibition at the Carrboro ArtsCenter, shows at the Durham Art Guild and Visual Art Exchange in Raleigh, and a three person show at Winmore Studio in Chapel Hill.
My Teaching Philosophy
Art allows students to gain an alternative perspective of the world while expanding their creative and problem-solving skills through visual means. Improving the quality of education for all students is something I am greatly interested in, and I believe I can better accomplish this goal through small group instruction and more personalized attention to the students. Art plays a vital role in the development of holistic growth needed to be a productive citizen, and I hope to foster that growth, as well as instill a desire for learning and passion for the arts through my teaching.
Expression is vitally important within the arts. Beyond the academic aspects, art is crucial in allowing people to explore themselves and the world around them through alternative avenues. I encourage experimentation and individuality within my classes. My goal is for each student to progress in their techniques and understanding of art fundamentals, but also learn a little more about themselves through the process. My projects create limitations through which the students explore their boundaries, while allowing them to create a unique piece of art. No two works should look the same!
